What is your favorite thing about homeschool or why do you want to homeschool?

  • Answer:

I am a homeschooling parent. I have four children- the oldest is 14 and none of them have ever been to a traditional school. What I like about homeschooling is that they get a customized education instead of having to fit into the cookie cutter mold. When you are dealing with a large group, you have to teach to the median- meaning some get held back and some get left behind. With homeschooling, I can focus on the individual strengths and weaknesses of my children and make sure that they get a solid education. As for socialization, school is not the only- and is certainly not the best- place to socialize. Many people make several mistaken assumptions when considering homeschoolers and socialization. First, they believe that since a traditional school student is in a classroom all day, with very little opportunity for real socialization, then homeschoolers must be at home all day. That is simply not true, of course. Many also mistake being around a large group of people as having friends. They are acquaintances. There is a difference, and it is something children need to learn. Having a few real, good friends is much better than having a large group of acquaintances.

The socialization is my favorite thing-- the kids are in so many different activities, but in environments I find far more positive and better models of behavior than public schools. People are generally happier and friendlier in homeschool groups, the kids are not so mean to each other, they don't treat adults like the enemy and they don't seem to be trying to grow up so fast. It's very refreshing.

I actually do a private online school where I basically teach myself. I absolutely love it because the track I am on right now I will be graduating high school 1 year early. Meaning I will be going to college at the age of 16. I love the freedom, I can travel as much as possible, and I can get done with school work when I can. I can learn material I don't understand and speed through things I do. Not spend 30 minutes waiting for 20 others kids to ask questions about something I get. My teachers on an online school are always there to help, I can call and email them and they must respond within 24 hours. There are clubs, sports, church etc. There are plenty of ways to socialize other than school. Good Luck with your friend!

Hello Lisa, What I personally like about homeschooling is that I have a lot of time to do things that normal traditional school kids don't. Because of this, I have more experience in what I focus in. For instance, I know how to roller blade and bake, compared to kids my age, all they know is study and take exams. They don't know how to bake and definitely don't know how to skate! they just don't have the time. Mostly, the best thing about homeschooling is that you have the freedom of time to choose what you want to do. Plus, it's bully-free and parents don't have to worry that much. homeschooling isn't for everyone, so don't be disappointed or think your friend has made the wrong choice if she/he doesn't agree in homeschool. By the way, what online school do you attend?

My favorite thing about homeschooled is that I can choose my own schedule, I can study wherever I want and I can also have more time to spend with my family.
