  • Answer:

    1. Check out the state and local laws. You may be required to report your intention to homeschool to your local school, but if not you don't need to go there. There also may be record keeping requirements. Don't back off if the school says you can't homeschool. You can. 2. You can start anytime you want. You don't have to follow the public school schedule. The biggest delay is waiting for materials to arrive. If you have materials already or will be using all online, then you can start whenever you are ready. Even if you are required to do paperwork, you can still start now, just be sure to get the papers in ASAP. 3. Decide what you want to study. Look online at curriculum providers and online schools. Homeschoolreviews.com is a good site for comparing and getting real world feedback. There are many different options for homeschooling. You can do online public school for free through K12. You can get a premade full curriclum (curriclum in a box) from several providers such as Sonlight, Abeka, Christian Light Education, Bob Jones University, Alpha Omega, and BYU. Sonlight uses more literature while Abeka is mostly textbooks and Christian Light mostly workbooks so they all have pros and cons depending upon how you learn best. You can also pick and choose subjects from different providers. There are also some companies that only have single subjects such as Math-U-See (math) and Exploration Education (physics). Prices vary but cost isn't necessarily a determination of quality. Christian Light Education is less than $300 for a full year of all subjects. Some curriculum providers also have academic counseling and record keeping for an additional fee. This is sometimes called an umbrella school because they cover your homeschool like an at-home private school correspondance program. However, it is generally considered a form of homeschooling since all work is still taught and done at home.

DO NOT HOMESCHOOL! AND DO NOT GO THROUGH K12! Do online schooling. CONNECTIONS ACADEMY IS THE BEST SCHOOL EVER!!!!!!! Go onto their website to find out info: connectionsacademy.com

Just to mention that the link to #2 given by another answerer is not working. The link for the affidavit will be http://www.cde.ca.gov/sp/ps/rq/affidavit.asp While you can't fill it out until Oct. 1, you can legally start home schooling until you do get it done. You could decide to home school today, and start today! You don't even have to start Aug. 28, but make a schedule for 180 days. Remember holidays and breaks! We are starting Sept. 7, except one online computer class starts Sept. 2. The other steps? There are records you need to keep available. http://californiahomeschool.net/howTo/records.htm This is if you want to home school at home, with your parents the teachers. You also have the options of enrolling in a district home study program, or online schools. There are free online charter schools for California. These would take some time, to enroll. I believe some are full now. So, take some time to research the method you intend to use. Talk to your parents. Find out what classes you want and need. You don't have to keep to the state graduation requirements, but if you ever want to go to college it is recommended! Once you know how you will do it, you can find the curriculum you need.
