What does it take to get a CDA?

CDA (Child Development Associates)?

  • Hi! I'm a nanny and I'd like to get my CDA. However, I can only take online classes. Period. I'm a military spouse so I have a 6,000 dollar credit that I can apply ...show more

  • Answer:

You have to document 120 hours of training in 6 areas. Not all training is acceptable. The problem with just taking classes is that you don't get help with the nuts and bolts of the application process. However, you have a bigger problem. You cannot apply for a CDA without 420 hours experience in a classroom .Being a nanny doesn't count. For more information go to cdacouncil.org. I've been teaching CDA courses for ten years. The only on-line one I have seen that is at all acceptable can be found at teachingstrategies.com. Look under Professional Development. If you do decide to take a CDA program on line make sure you know what is included. Do they send someone to do your observation or do you have to pay someone on your own? Remember also that there is a $325.00 fee to be paid to the Council in Washington for your assessment.
