To be a preschool teacher (as opposed to a child care worker), depending on where you work you might need the university degree in early childhood education in order to get an early childhood teaching certificate or you might need a lesser degree and child care certification. Depending on where you plan to teach, it varies a lot. To prepare in high school, I'd say take college prep. courses for sure: chemistry, biology, higher levels of math. That will enable you to get into any university you want. They will be looking for good grades in those kinds of courses. Take any home ec. or family study type classes offered. Art and music classes would be good as well. As someone else said, volunteer experience with preschool children would be beneficial as well.

As far as I know, you don't really specifically NEED anything. In New Zealand anyway, you can study as an Early Childhood Teacher with just English.
