Would masters in Industrial engineering be good?

Masters in Computer Engineering. Is this a good program to study if I badly want to work at Apple?

  • I will be studying Masters in Computer Engineering this fall. Will it act as a platform, a base, to secure a job at Apple? What are the skills that I should develop? What are the job positions that I can apply for?

  • Answer:

I'm not qualified to answer this but personally if i was searching for an answer i would read "Inside Apple" by Adam Lashinsky and get an idea of what the working culture is about before committing to a learning path. As an aside having read the biography of steve jobs and get some view of the company it seems they really favour original and creative types. I think people able to demonstrate critical and innovative thinking skills will give you a far better chance than the degree in itself. that said, i suspect that's what the ethos was under Jobs. I dont know what it's like under Cook and how things will be in the future.

Computer engineering is definitely in demand at Apple. I know several people that were hired there this year with CE and Comp Sci degrees. The real qualifier at Apple though, is to be excellent in whatever you choose to specialize in. One friend was an exceptional with Objective C and FPGA. He won awards for his projects in college. Another mastered Objective C at a very young age, and developed lots of useful utilities for Apple users. These people, above and beyond their exceptional technical skills, were passionate about the brand. Apple likes every employee to understand that design and passion are the most important aspect of their products (yes, even in the Tim Cook era). Lastly, Apple design is thoughtful. Be elegant in your execution and take pride in all your work... I used to work for Apple retail (as a Mac technician) and they held us to very high standards. I can only imagine that is magnified at the corporate level.
