Has anyone tried to create a distributed Wikipedia?
-
Wikipedia has had a lot of success crowdsourcing content but they seem to frequently be in need of monetary donations to pay for expenses associated with running servers, etc. Could Wikipedia reduce these costs by building a tool that would allow individuals to volunteer to serve small chunks of Wikipedia content to one another? If so, are there any projects underway that are working on this?

Answer:
Yes, quite frequently. And failed. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:HaeB/Timeline_of_distributed_Wikipedia_proposals
