What is a good beginner fly rod and reel combo?

Is this fishing rod and reel a good combo?

  • I'm planning on buying a rod and reel seperate. The reel I'm planning on getting is a Pflueger President Medium action reel and a Shakespeare medium action Ugly Stik do you ...show more

  • Answer:

The Presidents are pretty nice reels. As for the rod, it definitely wouldn't be my first choice, because I just don't like Ugly Stiks. However, I hear that the Ugly Stiks Lites are fairly decent rods. Just be sure that the medium action rod isn't too thick or too stiff. Ugly Stiks are kind of known for not be very sensitive, which isn't a good thing on a lot of occasions; especially when it comes to finese bass baits that you will likely be using with this setup. Look at some reviews on Bass Pro or a similar site for the specific rod that you're referring to, and see what they look like. Regardless, this setup will get you by.

deffinatly i heard those are the best thing to ue for begineer bass which im doing

Pflueger President is a pretty good reel, matched up with an Ugly Stick is a decent combo. Its best to match the line rating for the combo. Example, if reel suggests 4-8 lbs line, the rod should be in that catagory also, not 12-20 lbs. Having said that, once you start advancing, you'll find the Ugly Stick is not ideal for many techniques and you'll start to understand which rod you will need for your style of fishing, but its still a decent 'beginner' rod that is inexpensive and fairly indestructible, your car door will break it before any fish does. Your Pflueger on the other hand will probably give you years of satisfaction.

Not a bad combo at all. I still have a few Ugly Sticks hanging in the garage and pull one out from time to time if I am going to be skipping docks. The quick tip lets me load up and skip a weightless plastic to the back of the longest docks. The reel is solid. Take care of it and it will take care of you. In my opinion, if you are on a budget, spend as much as you can on a quality reel and upgrade your rod when you get the chance. A quality reel will last a lifetime if properly maintained. You'll find that different rods will come and go as your experience and styles change.
