Merle I hope you don't mind me answering all three questions here. The least rod action you can go with is heavy and I would make it a 6 1/2 foot 1 piece pitching stick with a very fast retrieve bait casting or small level wind reel like the millionaire by daiwa or calcutta by shimano the line should be 15 -18 pound big game trilene for musky and pike and I would also use (suggest) low visibility green. Baits would have to be larger buck tails and larger in line spinners or spinner baits that are also huge. titanium and stainless mixed as far as what the baits metals should be and cast long and far into coves that aren't too deep but full of weeds and hydrilla and keep the blades of the baits under the surface but barely. the best method is to never break the surface with the baits but retrieve them as fast as you can making them travel the same direction as the wind and or current. use the rod tip to actually change the baits direction during the retrieve and go around stumps and visible weed lines. for the walleye you can use a medium action from 6 1/2' to 7 1/2' but I would stay with a one piece and whatever you are most accustomed too you can either use spinning or conventional. The tour likes spinning gear. I would use 8 pound test green trilene XL and drop fluourscent leadheads with leeches to the bottom wherever my electronics pointed out a raised hump ( 20 - 30 feet deep ) or a rock pile rising at least four feet off the bottom.

Sounds like your doing well over all.. broken line is part of the game so your not over doing the tackle. Put 12 lb. test line on a good reel, not the cheep stuff. . Rod, they break when miss used, stepped on and such. So, get an ugly stick lite and take care of it.. Med. action 6'6" would do for almost every thing around. Your hooking the fish so what ever hood you use is working. Fishing is fishing, not every trip will get a hook up with a fish or even a lot of fish. This is why we do it.. it is a challenge.

The best line, in my opinion, is Power Pro braided line with a Seaguar Flurocarbon or Ande monofilament leader. I use Shimano spinning reels and Shakespeare Ugly Stik rods with Gamakatsu circle hooks. The answer though, is that is mostly depends on what kind of fishing you are doing. What is it you are trying to catch? Where are you fishing? Is it possible that you keep losing fish because of a poor drag setting or poorly tied knots?

they wont break fireline. just make sure you tie a non-slip knot. it has no stretch to it though, so if you troll with it, make sure to set your drag low so you dont rips the fishes mouth off. i cant really answers the rest because i dont know what kind of fishing youre doing.
