  When I was a kid, I did some trout fishing in the Sespe Creek up in Ventura county, however it was on private land (a Boy Scout camp). I think there is some public access to that, though. I also got trout in Malibu Creek (that is private land, though nobody ever stopped me), but now I think it's closed to protect the steelhead. I think there are streams in the mountains (near Big Bear) which are fishable, though I've never tried them. The problem is there aren't too many year-round streams in southern California, at least ones big enough to support a trout population. There are trout planted in lakes, reservoirs, and trout ponds, so there are plenty of fish, just not in streams. I'd suggest you head up to the eastern Sierras in the summer, where you'll have plenty of streams to choose from.
