Dude what a good question. Hard to answer though. In the Halibut Derby last weekend there were some really big fish weighed in. Some shared where they got them but mostly it was not to far off shore in Santa Monica Bay. 10 to 50 feet of water. The leader board looked like: 1st Place - Dominic Gonzalez with a 37.3 pound halibut 2nd Place - Ruben Valdez with a 35.8 pound halibut 3rd Place - Mark Pierpont with a 35.6 pound halibut - Kayaker 4th Place - Tom Brooks with a 28.0 pound halibut 5th Place - Mike Eckardt with a 25.6 pound halibut All the Answers above were good but they left off the Ocean fishing in great places like Marina Del Rey and Los Angeles Harbor like "22nd Street Landing" all the way down to San Diego. I watch the fish reports like at local tackle stores. If you are in Los Angeles one cool shop is Purfields Pro Tackle. They have an online fish report page.

I used to be a California native for 18 years.Go to the Department of Fish and Game for all info. Since I lived in South bay region I was not exposed to the wilderness much. However, Inyo National Forest has a variety of good stream, lakes, ponds, and etc. Down in the south Moreno Lake(San Diego County), Santa Ana River Lakes(Anaheim not natural but has big fish), Salton Sea(offers good mullet and Tilapia fishing, corvina has been caught here I believe). Salton sea is a salt water lake, very unique, it is located near San Diego but east or north east of there in the desert. The LA aqueduct is a good catfish and Stripper fishing spot. But you have to fish from here in central California. Thats all I can remember , so check out spots online. If you plan to do some outdoor stuff besides fishing go to the Morena Lake area, they have plenty of that.
