Best Android Wikipedia App?

Why do some companies seem to treat their Android Apps like stepchildren when compared to their Apple Apps?

  • Facebook, Foursquare, Quora all have terrible Android Apps but excellent Android Apps. Wikipedia had an unbearably terrible Android App and has improved only recently. Why does this difference exist inspite of Android having a much larger user base? Is it because Apple Apps get higher priority due to higher expectations of quality?

  • Answer:

iPhone has the first mover advantage (in smartphone market share) with a better app ecosystem and of course, a less fragmented system. It takes more effort and time to optimize the same experience across the many android devices with different hardware and specs. As mentioned by Gupta in the comments, another possible reason is that it makes economic sense to develop for iOS first as iOS apps tend to have higher revenue. In the earlier days, Android versions of these apps were usually ports of their iOS apps, using iOS design patterns. That being said, recent trends show that the quality of Android apps are getting better. As Android matures (starting from ICS, v4.0), there are better design guidelines and standards in place.
