Answer:
Sailboats are not the best way... they are the ONLY way... at least unless you have more money then God. To start with, you will want a sailboat... in a "Sloop" design. These are the easiest to learn and sail - they are also the most popular. You don't mention "how many people" so, I will just say that if you are doing this alone - a 26' - 30' would make good sense - as it is easy for one person to handle. If a couple - you may want to stretch it out to at least 32'... (it all depends on your own comfort zone). Remember... even after your boat is paid for - it is still going to cost you money - for storage, docking, slip fees, stepping the mast, maintanence, bottom paint, etc. and almost all of these fees are based on (or influenced by) the length of your vessel. I always recommend the following: 1. Don't buy the biggest boat you can afford - but the smallest you and your crew can live comfortably on. 2. buy used 3. Keep it as small and as simple as possible. 4. Pay cash for your boat - especially if you plan to live aboard while voyaging from one Paradise to another... (you don't want to have to leave Paradise cause you have to go home and work to make boat payments). 5. You MUST get a "blue water" or "ocean passage" sailboat. By this, I mean a boat that has been built, rigged, and equipped specifically for crossing the ocean. These vessels are stronger, heavier, and much-much safer and seaworthy then their inland lake or coastal cruising cousins. Not only that - it will mean the difference between you being deathly seasick 40% of the time or slightly seasick 2% of the time. (not that there is such a thing as being "slightly" seasick... lol) How much are they? In todays market, you can find a really good seaworthy vessel at a great price on the used market... I'd say anything from $20,000 up - can get you in a very nice boat - and that is what you need - but remember this: . There is no room for "cheap" on an ocean crossing vessel - that means no cheap boat, no cheap gear, no cheap equipment, and no cheap tools... buy good quality second hand... but don't buy cheap stuff. The less you pay for your boat - the more money you'll have for cruising... I have a list on good cruising sailboats at the bottom (2nd link below) If you scroll down toward the bottom of the page, you will see sections like "boats under $25,000" etc. To get good current prices however, you will have to find the boat size that fits your needs, and then do a google seach for that vessel... Good Luck! Happy and Safe Boating! Capt. John

because of the distance being travelled it would take a fairly large motor boat to have the fuel carrying capt. (range) to be able to cross oceans, that why most personal ocean crossing boats are cruising sailboats. oceans have been crossed in sailboats as small as 13' but most sailors will want a sailboat of at least 26' and up to 40' for motion comfort and carrying capt. properly equipped cruisers will run from about $20,000 and up. (with exceptions) there are many web sites and forums on ocean sailing and cruising sailboat designs. crossing oceans takes skill, knowledge and experience, plan on putting a few miles under your keel before yoju attempt it. try doing a google search on ocean cruising sailboats. hope this helps

To cross the Atlantic you'll want to allow yourself a few weeks. Depending on the boat it may take a little less, but hopefully not more! I would suggest a sailboat in the 35 foot range and getting a lot of experience beforehand. This is my wishful-thinking site for a new sailboat but you might be able to find a good deal locally, also. Many of these are very good boats at excellent prices if you know what to look for but you have to act fast when you find one because a bargain will go fast. But be careful of fixer-uppers, too. http://www.sailboatlistings.com/
