How many members does Amazon have?

Google Trends: What are some creative ways to track users or members of a product or service (Netflix, Pandora, Amazon, Ebay)?

  • Say Netflix or Pandora subscribers, or Amazon or Ebay users, and the list goes on.  Has anyone thought of a creative way to try to back in or estimate user or usage metrics such as these?

  • Answer:

On Github, I found a way of using their advanced search to count the number of users, including the history of them over time. See my answer here For another service - I'd definitely look closely at user account identifiers, in URLs, HTML, POST requests and the API. Look for ways of getting counts back. Look for things where you can filter in some way by time, or get dates as things happen. Amazon and Ebay would be easiest of the services you list as they have some clear public data - at least you can spot volume of listings (and changes to that over time) in their marketplaces in a straightforward way just using various RSS feeds. And watch even how long things take to sell. Finally, look at any public accounts that they have - there are various ways to get that, according to country and whether the company is public or private. Revenue amounts, profit amounts, allocation of revenues to different services (all in annual reports) combined with known pricing can give you lots of bounds on user numbers.

There are bunch of competitive intelligence tools that could give you that information. My favorite tool is comScore. It'll give you monthly unique visitor data for any major Internet service including the ones you mention in your question. However, comScore is not a free tool. http://Compete.com is a good alternative and it works on a freemium model. Although, comScore is a more widely cited and hence a more authoritative source.

Many times you will find this sort of data in the annual reports of these companies.Sometimes the companies make the numbers stand out from the report and in other times they sort of “hide” them in the reports.eBay for example didn’t reveal the number of sellers on its platform until late 2015 when they stated that there are 25 million sellers. This number is of course highly debatable because how would you define sellers? Are they full time sellers, occasional sellers? Made 1 sales in the last 12 months? This is something eBay doesn’t reveal, it’s much more sexy to advertise that you have 25 million sellers versus only 5 million full-time sellers. The number of users is something eBay updates on every financial report and the current number stands at around 160 million users.
