Silly question... I was recently given a Yamaha YZ something dirt bike that is from around 1982 or so. I didn't think to ask how to start it, because I figured it would be ...show more

Answer:
The silver lever in the middle of the picture is the kickstart http://www.bikepics.com/pictures/1841113/ The battery should be behind the scott sticker http://www.bikepics.com/pictures/1841111/ I have picked a 125, most should be similar. Not all dirt bikes have a battery fitted, it is possible to run a dirt bike using a battery eliminator.

Have you ever watched Easy Rider? While the bikes there are bigger, they start them with a "kick starter", which when you sit on the bike will be a pedal that you pull out from under your right leg near the knee and it flips to the side up high. You are to put your right leg on top of the pedal and drop your weight down on the right leg while keeping the leg stiff and straight. The kick arm will crank over the engine. None of this push button whoosy stuff. You are the man when you can kick over a Harley1200 There should be an ignition key for it (I am not familiar about Yami's but on a Kawasaki and Suzuki, the key goes in between the tach and speedo gauages. Yamaha may have it below the gas tank on the right side. You definitely should have got a key, because anyone can take off on the bike. Battery may be under the seat when you flip the seat open using the key. Probably a 6 volt as you only need the power to excite the charging system. Yeah, it sounds like it ain't all there, so you may need your bike serial number and take it to a Yamaha dealer and see if they can help you regarding a key.
NEVER wrong SOME of the TIME
Glad you paid no money for something that is next to being worthless unless it was well maintained, in which case it would not be worthless and would have been sold. But to answer your question - There is a key to starting it but that key is not a tangible one and I suggest that unless you are REALLY interested in learning how to ride that you just forget that you ever received that bike.
