    I made one out of duct tape and those styrofoam packing peanuts for my girlfriend. I even painted it black with a cool lightning bolt on it. It didn't have a happy ending.

If you are in the UK, the key factor re safety is that the helmet must be made to British standards BS6658 or ECE22.05, it will be with the BS kite mark, probably on a card label. Have a look here; http://www.leics.gov.uk/crash_helmets.pdf

The good helmets are made of a Kevlar carbon weave. This makes them light weight and strong. If you go to shoei.com or scorpion helmets web page you can find diagrams you could use. Scorpion for instance has two layers of foam padding one layer for low speed crashes and the inner one is for high speed crashes this is important some cheap helmets can do more damage in low speeds because of the structure. Cheap helmets are made of plastic and do not vent. Look into aria helmets they have amazing structural support and there super light..

Your best bet is to go to a motorcycle shop where helmets are sold & telll them you're doing a paper & need some info. Just a kind suggestion when doing your paper. You need to brush up on your spelling & punctuation. :)
