What is a good name for a photography business?

  • My 13-year-old daughter is an exceptionally good photographer, and she wishes to start her own internet business. Any good, catchy names for her business? Also, any advice is greatly ...show more

  • Answer:

    She is too young to own a "business". You must sign any contracts for her, collect taxes under your name, purchase any insurance should she photograph people and register any chosen name. A business account also must be opened in your name. Catchy names are a sure give away that an under aged, under talented kid is playing at business.

I second Fishmeister. It's hard enough being an adult and turning out quality enough images to be able to sell much less being a 13-year-old with a parent egging you on. It's normal for a parent to think their child's work is spectacular but often these views are much too biased for a more critical review. If she really is a good photographer then use that to help her learn and grow so when she's a legal adult she can decide for herself if she wants to be a pro. Good luck!

great photographers trade on their name, like ansell adams and anne geddes, they dont use catchy names that is really unprofessional in the industry

Sounds like she's off to a good start! : ) She won't be able to start her own business though, until she is of age and can process the necessary documents and is able to get at least a work permit. (I think the general age for a work permit is 15). As far as website names go, the rule of thumb is to use your own name. Say her name is Tiffany Damask or something like that...then her website should be www.tiffanydamask.com. A teacher of mine made a good point when she said, "When you think about buying a purse, what are the names that catch your eye? Do you say, "If I had the choice, I'd say that I want to go to Target and buy a store brand!" or do you say, "I want to go buy a Gucci or Louis Vouitton?" You say, "I love Vera Wang. I love Louis Vouitton. etc." It's not that the store brands are bad, but the "big names" stick out there as personal ones. There are also issues of extra permitting and separate accounts and all of those extra headaches if you decide to use a fictitious business name. Stick with your (her) own name if you can.

Just to play the devil's advocate, how about, against all odds, 'This Little Chick's Pix'. :}
