What is there to do in and around Limoges, France?

  Limoges is a very scenic part of the country. The local officials have taken great strides in making it tourist friendly. Do take a camera. The centre of the city houses fabulous architectural examples including the cathedral, the council offices and the superb 'Grande Marche'; there is even a sort of open museum area showing the established artisan skills of the city and surround. The Butchers' houses and old ceramic producers have a fascinating and picturesque tale which is very well illustrated. Food is of very high standard and fairly priced; look for the local Limousin beef. Pastry and Chocolate makers are plentiful. The area is luscious and verdant due to the mass of small lakes and ponds - all of which attract birdlife of great variety. Try a local beer, Bierre de la Ponts is a good example. However do check on a map, the idea of popping to Paris is a bit 'off the wall', however passing through when travelling to/from Limoges might be a good idea.
