How can I find good list of small companies in a certain field when I am looking for a job?

• I always read statistics about how the real job market is in small companies, that small companies are responsible for 75% of new job creation, etc. However, it is very difficult to find these companies apart from their job posts on craigslist. And I know that most positions are filled without being advertised. So I am looking for a way to find small companies in an efficient way. The field I am looking into is graphic design (Adobe CS), animation and 3d modeling (Maya, 3ds Max, Cinema4d) by the way if that helps.

  Oh, this is a time that you have to do a little bit of research. So you want to do graphic design and 3/D modeling-then you'll have to narrow your focus-do you want to work for advertising? Publishing? Figure out some focus and then as you research, it will become easier for you to find more of the information (for advertising, you'd be reading Ad Age, for publishing, you'd look to ED2010, mediabistro or publishers weekly) If you have no idea where to start searching, I'd suggest going to http://alltop.com As you read more articles about what areas you want to go into, attend events based on organizations that would attract those companies (like the art directors club, or AIGA) then you'll naturally come across more smaller companies. Note: I'd make sure that your portfolio is updated online before you start doing any of this-that way if you meet someone from a good small company, your website is good to go!
