How do I play DVD movies on my PC?

Why is it Some DVD movies will not play on some DVD players but will play on a PC using Windows Media Pl?

I am the furthest from being an expert but we had the problem and it seemed to get worse as time went on. My brother told us that our DVD player was getting old and didn't recognize some of the newer DVDs. Whether or not this was the case we did buy a new DVD player and the problem was resolved. Before doing that you might clean your DVD player and disk. Edit-My wife said that if you are using a back up copy of the DVD movie you might have it in the wrong format.
