  I suppose the easiest way to define blu ray is that it is a full high definition version of a movie or show. unlike a DVD which is standard definition or 480p, a blu ray is a disc encoded at a much higher bit rate with a smaller laser so a much sharper picture and uncompressed audio can be recorded on a single disc of the same physical size as a DVD. These files you are talking about are 720p or 1080p resolution so they should look better than DVD and may have been copied from a blu ray disc. be mindful, though that many of these downloaded videos are highly compressed and in most cases are not the same quality as an actual blu ray disc with a capacity of 50gb for a movie.
