How do I burn a movie that will work in my dvd player?

I downloaded a movie it was a AVI how can i burn it to a dvd to work on a normal dvd player??????? please help?

  I use a free downloadable program called Any Video Converter. You install it and add the file to the convert list (instructions should be available online) and select the output format to be NTSC. Then you click the encode button. When it's done, you can save it to a folder, then go to Windows DVD Maker, add the newly converted video, and burn it onto a DVD. And there you go.
