  • Answer:

go to start>run, type eventvwr.msc in the event viewer logs look for for the following event IDs: 1000, 1517, 1524, or 1500 if they are present, it indicates that when XP logs off it can't unload the user profile - the profile of the logged-on user tries to unload the user's registry but fails because it's still in use; this can in most cases be resolved by downloading and installing this free tool http://www.snapfiles.com/get/uphcservice.html once installed, there will be a new service running on your system called the User Profile Cleanup Service. If you are comfortable with editing the registry, then I strongly advise that you implement these well documented registry tweaks: http://www.johntp.com/2006/02/14/speed-up-windows-xp-shutdown/ Finally, sometimes a recent hardware change can cause these issues - if you have anything attached via usb, unplug it and see if it helps.
