What are the main things I should know in the Food Retail industry?

Hi, I'm going to start a 6month internship in equity research. The team i was recruited by specialise in the food retail industry and so I was wondering wether you knew any sort of factors (from a Business or Financial POV) that are unique to this industry. By Food retail I mean firms like Sainsbury, Walmart, Tesco, Waitrose (owned by John Lewis group), Morrisons etc.
