What are the key differences between Linux kernel 2.6 and Linux kernel 3.0?

  While Mr. C is correct I might mention some fun I've been having since reinstalling Slackware to illustrate that there is no difference. Slackware is as close to vanilla linux as you can get: you don't even have to install from binaries if you don't want to. I've been compiling my primary browsers (seamonkey and firefox which are actually essentially the same) from source using a special script called a slackbuild. The first time I tried it after switching it crashed complaining there was no Linux3.0.mk file. This was firefox 5.0. It wasn't till Seamonkey 2.2b2 (I'm on b3) that instead of calling up the 2.6.39 kernel I had run I just unarchived the source code cd'd to /mozilla/security/coreconf and COPIED Linux2.6.mk to Linux3.0.mk. Then I rearchived it and ran in the background. Of course this means I may not distribute binaries or source code without changing the name and icons (removing copyrighted and trademarked material) but the point is that the only reason the system cares is because of the change between 2.5 and 2.6. Which was greater. Linus Torvald called the name change an Alphha Male thing.
