No way... The speed you are getting is already fast as for as mobile internet... When you got a 3G and you service provider too, then only you will get 3.1 mbps.

Hmmm...... 980 kb/s over GPRS...man you must be kidding....it can't be correct....check it out again Regarding 3G handsets....no it won't give you extra speed...... You can easily understand if u think of a funnel, ........the tip of a funnel is like your service provider's speed and the broader part of funnel is like your Handset...... I guess you understood :-) you won't get more from tip...even if your taking capacity is much more.....
