Why did my tv turn itself on and go to a white screen then turn itself back off again?

This has happened to us to with our samsung . Ours turns on but does not turn off. The strange thing is that it has happened twice and both times it was when one of us sat at the couch and said something like, "We should watch a movie." while none of us were near the remote. I'm sure that there is a logical explenation for this, but all I'm trying to say is that you are not the only one
