Where does the black cat superstition originate?

Where did the Friday 13th superstition originate from?

  • Where did the superstition come from in the first place?

  • Answer:

In the Christian/European tradition this originates from the idea that with Judas, there were 13 apostles. Remember Judas was replaced after he died, but since he was still an apostle there were technically 13 apostles. So, 13 came to be seen as an unlucky number. Other cultures and religions have stories too as to why 13 is considered unlucky.

Well, I guess it's called black Friday and 13 is considered unlucky, then again, I really don't know. For me, Friday the 13th is my lucky day, I used to be a mad punter and won nearly $40,000 on Friday the 13th. Wish every month had one!!!!

Plenty of people have commented on Thee Friday part, but no mention of the 13th. Biblically speaking (as well as other cultures in the near east) 7 is the number of completion, or whole, or good, as is it's multiples (14, 21, 28, etc.). 13 comes up short and is seen as not good, even evil. This where the number 666 is seen as the number of Satan (6 is 1 short of 7 and there are 3 of them for emphasis). So, the 13th, is just as important as the day (Friday). However, since in other cultures, Jewish for one, the sabbath begins at sundown on Friday (we would say Sat.) you can also see Friday as falling short of the Sabbath and in the same way as the 13th falling short of a multiple of 7, it is incomplete, bad or even evil. So, the two combined make Friday the 13th a (potentially) bad day.
