  When I write papers I never know how to start them, generally i work from the middle outward. I'll start a passage that I know how to word and then just keep going, in the process of writing the body I often find that I can then think of an intro the blends much better since I already know where it's going. If you don't want them to pity you then down play the hardships, write about what you achieved and put what you had to over come as a second thought. You can't count on a hard life to get you into school, you need to have truly excelled despite the hardships, otherwise you look like your trying to throw a pity party and college admissions get a thousand "X, Y Z, happened to me but I graduated high school anyway, so you should let me in' essays.
