My daughter is a green-eyed, blonde haired white girl who is basing her future on a career in volleyball. I really need to know what Hawaiian high schools have the best volleyball ...show more

Answer:
It would help to know why you're looking to move in the first place. What you're doing for income is going to limit your realistic options. If everything is revolving around your daughter's "career" in volleyball and you have no idea what you're doing for income, your move likely isn't wise. All that having been said, I believe Punahou recently won their 30th division I state championship. That's going to be a not-cheap private school, however. And seriously, it's very very rare that anyone makes a "career" out of volleyball beyond the college level. You and your daughter should likely be pursuing options on the mainland unless you can provide more info about why you'd be moving to Hawaii in the first place. You seriously need some kind of back-up plan at the minimum, and any "career" your daughter would pursue in volleyball would almost certainly be via the mainland anyway.

Punahou probably has the best volleyball program. If you can afford the $20K a year, there is a stringent application process. Since alumnus Barry Obama became President, applications have increased by 300%. The deadline to apply for the 2013-14 school year is 1 Dec, 2012. For public high schools on the Island of O'ahu with good girls volleyball programs, she should look at Mililani or Kaiser.

Okay Hawaii's education system does not have a good reputation and sending your kids to private schools does not guarantee success. I have met many Punahou grads who ended up at a community college. It's very pricey to go to private schools. The only good public high schools would be Kalani and Kaiser but that would mean living in the upscale neighborhoods which costs a lot of money. If I had kids of my own I would live on the mainland because the quality of education is better and there is more opportunities. I remember my freshmen year in High school a lot of my friends from middle school would move to California or Washington State for high school and they got in to really good universities and their future is looking really good.

It depends what island you are moving to (there are 7 main islands total). Oahu is the most populated island and is where the state capitol is (although it is not the biggest island). If you are planning on moving to Oahu, your best bet is to move anywhere within the Central district and have your daughter attend any one of the central district public schools. The central district usually comprised of middle class families and she will not experience as much racism (if any racism) as she would in the other districts. She may not experience any at all. http://doe-jobs.k12.hi.us/aboutDOE/Central.htm I believe all the public schools have a volleyball team, so I don't really think that will be a problem, and I don't believe going to a private school will really help her with her volleyball career. If she really wants to get ahead in volleyball, definitely have her attend the University of Hawaii at Manoa after she graduates high school. They have an excellent volleyball program and their games are very well attended and supported by the community. They are also considered one of the best in the nation and have won several WAC and NCAA championships.

Not sure about the sports end of your question. I'm more concerned about the Culture Shock you and your family will experience. I'm white male, I moved to the Big Island at age 16 with my immediate family, from Chicago. I went through my junior and senior years at a rural H.S. on the Big Island. Rurual as in you didn't have to wear shoes to class if you didn't want to. That was 1973, now must at least wear flip-flops (called rubba slippahs) to class. My siblings and I experienced prejudice and racism from the other children, not so much the adult. Its a right of passage so to speak. A "Bullying" to see if you can stand your ground. Whites have a preconcieved and bad reputation for being arrogant, snobbish, (holier then thou), untrustworthy, lazy, rich, conceited to name a few. On the other hand white (haole- slang expression for white) girls, if they are generally attractive, are held in higher regard by the local males. Its just a noticable preference. But this is generally true with such a diverse population. Asian girls generally gravatate toward non-Asian boys. If you daughter excells at Vollyball and does not have that "I'm all it" attitude she will fit in (be accepted) more quickly. In the day, I went from having to fight the school bullies the first couple weeks of high school to writing the Senior Class play before graduation. You become... native. Mixing your culture with theirs. And like all people thinking of living in Hawaii from the mainland... what about cost. Well, milk is $6 a gallon, gasoline is $4.37 today, and a big box of kellogges sugar Frosted Flakes can get as high as $7 a box.
