  That's most likely your cheapest option. Your only option is a Peter Pan bus to Springfield and then Peter Pan or Greyhound to NYC, and then there are several lines from NYC-Washington. You could always go on one of the cheap buses (BoltBus, MegaBus), from NYC to Washington DC. Vamoose is another one that goes from NYC (Penn Station, I believe) to DC but not into downtown DC - only to Bethesda or Rosslyn, in the inner suburbs, though you can very easily connect from there to the Metro to the GWU campus. Also, Greyhound buses are cheaper now than they used to be from NYC-Washington, probably since there's so much competition on that route now. So I'd look into just staying on Greyhound/Peter Pan (which I believe are the same company?) - it might be just as cheap as the "cheap" buses. Booking in advance also makes a difference, especially on the cheaper buses, since they're so popular and they offer the cheapest fares for the advance tickets. And also, I'd look into Amtrak too, as the first response suggested. I grew up in Washington DC and went to UMass-Amherst, so I've taken this train a couple of times. It's quicker and easier (since you don't have to switch trains), even more pleasant than the bus - it's quite relaxing and scenic actually. I'm not sure how expensive it is compared to the bus, but it's worth looking at anyway.
