I'm getting a new horse in the next couple months. You start by finding a good training barn, and taking lessons there for however long you need before you are ready to buy. For me this was a full 2 years of lessons/leasing/showing, but it depends. Most trainers will find a horse for you when you are ready. I will be flying out of the province to try some horses my trainer considers suitable for me, and we will go from there. The trainer usually charges commission on the sales price- but all you have to do is pay, they deal with the vet check, etc. Chances are you aren't the best person to analyze a vet check. It comes down to making sure you get a professional's input in all aspects of your search for a new horse.

First of all, go to school and learn grammar, punctuation, and spelling. incompetent people + horses = seriously injured incompetent person and a ruined horse I would also suggest getting a LOT of experience around horses before you buy; take lessons, volunteer, and read every bit of information about horses you can find (that comes from a reliable source). Trust me, if you do that, you won't have to worry about purchasing a "bad horse". Add - Okay, so you can walk, trot, are learning how to canter, and have given horses treats before. This is what you should be able to do before you get a horse of your own, in your situation: - Walk, trot, canter with correct form (both the horse and yourself) - Easily groom and tack up by yourself - Understand basic first aid in case your horse gets scraped or sustains a minor injury that does not require veterinary attention - Be able to lead your horse correctly - Know how to lunge a horse - Understand basic training - Understand horse nutrition There is more, but I think that list will hold you for a while. Remember, you should be able to preform all of those skills with ease and confidence before you get a horse of your own.

If you have a few years to go then I would just say wait it out and get to know horses a little better. Get lessons and ride a few different horses. Get a feel for them and from there you can find out what it is your wanting and when it comes closer then you can ask people you know who something about horses like your instructor on tips for buying your first horse.

You should be doing all the horse riding and handling you can before you get one so it is you who does not get a good horse and then make it go bad because of your disabilities with a horse.

I would talk to my trainer about owning. I know a friend right now who is having our trainer look around for her because she is a lot more experienced with horses. She knows the "dont's" and "do's" in the horse world. I at the moment am looking for a freelease as I have been away from riding lessons for a long time, while I have just gotten over leasing a 10 month lease with a walker. At this moment what I think is best for you is Leasing a horse. You could lease one of your trainers horses and she can help you every step of the way. It would be a great experience and help you get into owning a horse quicker.

Well make sure you get a vet check. Take someone who knows alot about horses and you trust when you look at a horse. Make sure the horse is really the one you want dont just settle. I settled with my mare and we went through a year of hell but we finally get along. Ive had her for 3 years now and i love her but i learned to never settle. Just make 100% sure u want the horse before you buy it.
