Anyone have experience with being on a college equestrian team?

What JD said is correct. If you plan to ride on your school's IHSA team, you can enter your horse in the home show, but there's not guarantee you'll be the one riding him. And my schedule wasn't horrible. Only had practice two or three times a week and it was always at night. Only had like four shows.

My college showed through IHSA and you were allowed to keep your own horse at the school and practice with it. The shows however are random draws. If we hosted a show we used some of the schools horses as well as more advanced outside horses for the higher level riders. To be fair horses were drawn at random and that was the horse you rode. Same went for away shows, we used that schools horses and they were drawn at random. The practicing schedule wasn't bad at all, I was expected to be there at least once a week minimum, our trainers held all of the equestrian courses so you could pretty much show up at any time any day during the week to practice. I personally loved using the school horses because they were so easy to ride and learn on because they were worked with consistently. While I would have loved to have used my own mare I would have had to have spent much more time schooling her instead of just focusing on my own skill.

I'm not on the team, but my school has one. It's very expensive, and you do not get to show your own horse. You show one of the barn's horses. You get two lessons per week with the trainers and you show, of course.

I've never been on one, but I toured Sewanee (The University of the South) and they have a good equestrian team and you can bring your own horse. You might be able to bring your own to Auburn as well, but i'm not sure on that one.
