What can I do to grow awareness of important environmental/people issues?

  Start at home and with your own life in getting towards green/greener. Many/most of the issues all boil down to a few. You've got the 3 R's (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) or the 4 R's (Reduce, Reuse, Re-purpose, Recycle). And then, you've got the various evnironmental/habitat preservation and reclaimation efforts. It sounds like you have no one issue, task, or task type that pulls at your heart strings more than the others at this point. If you don't have a particular pulling at your heart strings, then I would recommend exploring an activity or group that is already in existance within your community. If you have no idea of where to begin, start by reading the various communinty meeting, community events, and/or community activities listings in your local papers for volunteer opportunities. Volunteer opportunities tend to come in three "flavors". One is a single instance, event driven, work party type of thing. The second is in preparation for a single event type of thing. And, the third is in a longer term commitment. If you want to explore what's going on towards enviornmental work in your area, seek out the first and the second type of volunteer activity. This will better allow you to get a feel for the organization, the group of people themselves, and different things going on. Volunteer for one event with one organization with its very definite time line scope, and then volunteer with a different organization for a different event. Volunteering with a couple of different groups will get you a view of how these types of groups work and the isssues of these types of groups too. Another approach is a grass roots thing. Increasingly, neighbors and small groups of people are getting together to discuss environmental issues, what they are doing to get green, what seems to work, what seems to be the pitfalls, group activities they are doing outside of the group, and then sometimes even some group efforts together. This is a smaller and lower risk thing to do. However, some of these groups have gotten pretty darned powerful. Imagine showing up 10 or 50 strong to a clean up or planting event that normally draws only a few. Imagine going to a city, county, or school district meeting 10 to 50 strong as a group to support a cause, ask for a change, or decry something. If you live in an apartment, imagine if a group of residents approach the management for a change. Often, nieghborhood association rules and regulations are stumbling blocks to what some would consider more environmentally friendly practices. Now imagine if a number of the members approached the board in a unified group, or voted in as a unified group? Just as a single person there are some things that you can do in the community too. For example, some people walk often with a garbage spear, gloves, and a garbage sack. If you have a park in your area, you might want to ask the park caretakers if there is something you can do in terms of volunteering. Or, you can ask if there is something they wished patrons would do for themselves; littering is typically a problem in many parks. These little things don't seem like much and give no great glory but, they do make a difference.
