What's it like being a wildlife biologist?

  • Answer:

If you want a career as a wildlife biologist, don't go for the general "environmental science" major because it will hurt your chances at getting the job you want. Make sure the degree has the word "wildlife" in it, such as "Wildlife Biologist" or "Wildlife Management". This site has some more Typical information. Starting salary in the federal government with a college degree (GS-05) is $27K a year. http://www.fws.gov/humancapital/jobs.html

Typical day is really going to vary depending upon what job you end up with. Check out the Texas A&M job board for available jobs that describe the work. Salary: Gonna be weak. This profession is largely driven by experience, with a typical college graduate with limited experience earning between 25-35,000 a year. If you wish to augment this, while in school take advantage of internships, research that your department is doing, and anything else that will bolster your resume. Typically, the first jobs that a college graduate obtains are going to be temporary seasonal positions (4-6 months) with low pay. The beauty of this is that you get to move all around the country, seeing new places, meeting new people and learning about different species. Right now you are interested in working at a zoo, that might change with experience. Hours: Extremely variable. Depending on what your research species is, what stage of their annual cycle they are in, etc, the hours can be very long, or very short. Careers: Do a google search for the texas a&m job board, its a listing of all available conservation biology jobs and will give you a lot of insight into this. Also, if you want to make a go out of this, ultimately you will need to pursue at least a M.S. Degree, and potentially a PHD further on down the road.
