How do you interpret the importance of biodiversity?

  • Answer:

The problem is the irreversability of extinction. Once a species is extinct it cannot be part of this globe again.Maybe this is inevitable due to change, if certain species do not adapt or can deal with the change they vanish. The problem is also human activity, we are causing lots of damage. The way I interpret this problem is why can't we reduce the damage? Biomass seems to be vanishing just like biodiversity. You might say what does it matter that certain small or big fish dissapeared from European waters or are on the verge of extinction, after all dinosaurs are not there anymore either except in the form or Komodo dragons? Why don't we simply reduce or minimize pollution to our freshwater bodies.

I interpret it as integrity. Here is an example: you can find a man who is a carpenter and he can build you a church steeple at a fraction of the cost you might have to pay if you hired it out to be built by a contractor. If he is clever, he will also be able to find a team of men to help him put it into place properly when it is finished and ready to raise up where it belongs. Caring for our planet is the same. Groups of people are discovering they can do equally as much on their own to impact our planet in a positive way than massive appeals to millions of strangers to impact in a dubious way which might take years. A single windmill is a fascinating thing to me. Wind power. The blades just turn and turn... but you have to build them far enough away from people so they don't have to hear (and sometimes don't have to see) them. The other thing which always made sense to me is tidal power - you know, the tremendous force of the tides moving first one way and then another, over and over again. If that is not a dependable source of power I do not know what would qualify. These are my thoughts in response to your question...

Without at least a certain amount of bio-diversity, life would get pretty boring. Also, the more species there are, the greater the likelihood of finding "natural" remedies for a variety of ailments. The "Earth's integrity" might be, in some sense, necessary for human well-being. But if we want to preserve bio-diversity, then highlighting its benefits for human survival is probably essential.
