I suggest practicing for less than 30 minutes per day and don't strain your voice. The voice is like everything else - you need to build up stamina. Be careful about belting because you can get nodes on your vocal chords and ruin your voice forever. Garageband (for mac) is probably enough to suit your needs. Also, Soundstudio (for mac) is a good program for simple audio editing and effects. I heard that Adobe has a new audio program but I haven't tried it. Other good audio software types are Sonar, Cakewalk, Cubase, Digital Performer, Protools... but this software gets up there in the $$$
