it depends what kind of songs you sing. if you are singing pop songs and trying to sound like the artist, remember their voices have been altered, so you probably are straining your voice. You might find it better to sing classical songs, or choral songs, as you can actually hear what you voice sounds like then. If you are in school, ask a music teacher to go up and down some scales with you, then ask them what range they think sounds best.
