You are on the way, but maybe just need some guidance. I answered a question for Boo "What do you think of this song?". She writes "songs", but really lyrics ARE poems (generally speaking) In fact some song lyrics are "nonsense" and don't even make sense! Try look at the lyrics of "MacArthur Park". It's a great song, but the lyrics are kind of strange! "Someone left the cake out in the rain"Lol! Songs are usually broken into: 1. Verses - The main melody line 2. Chorus - Usually after the first verse, chorus, second verse, chorus etc. (some songs have the chorus first, then the verse, back to chorus, then the 2nd verse) 3. Bridge - (A musical interlude that is different from the Verse or the Chorus) Try going to a "lyrics" web site and just examine lyrics to various songs you are familiar with so you can get a feel for "rhythmn", metering of the song, etc. Try even looking at the lyrics for "Christmas" songs. Short, no run-on sentences (which makes it hard to put to music). I agree with "Byrde94". Perfect example is "Rodgers and Hammerstein" Anyway, good luck to you!! (I am an amateur, please consult a professional for a more complete answer.) Sources: 1st link is my attempt to put her song to music. 2nd link is youtube so you can hear "MacArthur Park" 3rd link is the lyrics for Macarthur Park (I love this song!!!! CLASSIC!!

very common this is why a lot of "lyricists" work with a partner or co-writer, that does the music (you have to be flexible though, and willing to "re-write" it, sometimes, to fit in a "Musical Format" or you can just keep on working with it yourself

I enjoy writing songs and poetry too. Write the rhythm then the lyrics that's what I do most of the time "hope this helps"

Well, if you can write poetry, then you definitely have the potential to write songs. It's good first produce the rhythm, and the lyrics will flow to suite it. Great artists produce the sound FIRST, then the lyrics come.
