What does a minor do for you?

In a minor scale or chord, what is a minor 5th?

  • In the key of, say, D minor, which note is the minor 5th, and what is the difference between a minor 5th and a diminished fifth?

  • Answer:

A minor 5th doesn't exist in the 12-tone scale we normally play on. A diminished 5th, however, is the 5th degree of a scale that's lowered, so Gb of C major would be considered a diminished fifth. Also, a diminished 5th is considered an interval, a name for the distance between 2 notes(3 whole steps up from the note). In D minor, the diminished 5th would be G#, since 3 whole steps up from D is G#.
