you can definitely try Wynton Marsalis and Esperanza Spalding, those are some very contemporarily familiar names. but you can't go wrong with some older and some classic jazz artists: Dexter Gordon, Dizzy Gillespie, Wayne Shorter, Art Tatum, Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, the list goes on, and that's just instrumental jazz :]
