  • Answer:

She's right. Many thieves post false help wanted ads just to collect social security numbers. Unless you're 110% certain the site is legit don't give your number. Say will provide at interview or enter 000-00-000 if the site demands a number.

Only deal with companies that you know. ID theft from stolen ss numbers is rare. Reason: It's super easy to track down if someone opens credit under your name. Takes about 2 seconds to figure out who did it. The more common type of ID theft is where someone uses current credit card or debit card information and starts charging up a storm under your account. An employer will need your ss number. No way around it. Just deal with realiable companies that you know their locations. There are many scams out there - just be aware. Do not dare go through Craigslist or Facebook for jobs postings. Also clean up your facebook, if not delete it. (it's the first thing employers check).
