Are the plastic Easter eggs dangerous? A friend said they are made in China and have lead?
-
If there is lead wouldnt they be off the shelves?
-
Answer:
They might contain lead. Plastic Easter eggs and other easter items at a Hobby Lobby have tested positive for lead. Only a tiny fraction of items available for sale have ever been tested, so yes, an item containing lead could easily be on the shelves anywhere. Some people have said it is fine unless you put them in your mouths, but many people fill them with food (and you never know if a kid is going to put the egg in their mouth anyway). I personally use the plastic eggs as molds for egg-shaped Rice Krispie treats. I will not be using plastic eggs this year, regardless of what store they come from. I trust nothing manufactured in China anymore. Jewelry, toys, trinkets, decorations on the shelves in the US and Canada have not been tested for lead when they were imported.

Most of the lead warning that have come out recently are from lead paint that was painted onto toys. The Easter Eggs that I remember seeing are not painted but are given colors during the molding process - so the colors should not come off even if there is lead in the plastic. But, these days you never can tell, and I could be misinformed... so, why not just color up some real eggs of your own!!

if they were tested, but you don't eat the plastic eggs anyway.

http://www.pantagraph.com/articles/2008/03/19/news/doc47dfa89e1dec7658314863.txt If you do not want to go through the heartache of lead poison in your child, I wouldn't try it. Why take the risk? If you are confident your child is old enough to know not to put the egg in his/her mouth, than OK, or know the paint decorations won't chip off and get stuck on the candy inside, but do you really want to take the risk? Just go with the plain eggs (no decorations) and paint real eggs with your kids. If you still are concerned about using eggs from China for that egg hunt, make paper Mache eggs with your children the day before. Get some small balloons, blow them up to desired size, mix 3/4 white glue to 1/4 water or 1 part flour to 5 parts water... boil about 3 minutes and let cool. Cut strips of paper and coat the balloon, let dry. Paint the outside and let it dry. Open the egg by cutting in half with a razor blade, and fill with candy, toys etc. than either tape closed or take ribbon/yarn and criss-cross over the opening so the bow will be at the top closing the egg. You know these won't get your children sick!!! *unless it is from too much sugar :)
