  You don't have to wait to find out whether you can take the patent agent exam. You can apply right now. Find out all the info you need at: http://www.uspto.gov/web/offices/dcom/gcounsel/oed.htm You only need the proper technical degree or number of technical credits to sit for the exam. Some people find the exam rather difficult and the passage rate is low. On the job front, it may be more difficult to get a job in Patent Law without a hard engineering or advanced science degree, however, if you think you will really like it and can sit for the patent bar, then do it. If you can say that you are a patent agent before graduating and put emphasis on your software knowledge based on you company, you may be OK. As far as the money is concerned, the previous poster did not provide entirely accurate information. If you can get into a big AMA 100 law firm you will do quite well. In fact, many big law firms pay extra for patent associates as compared to regular associates. I would base your decision, at least in part, on whether you can sit to take the patent agent exam right now.
