  • Answer:

You don't always need a medical background. I landed my first job in a hospital in the Admitting Dept. fresh out of high school. A few years later I got recruited to a Medical Records department at a different hospital and I had no experience in that area. I have also worked in a nursing home and was taught to do ICD-9 coding. Still no formal schooling. I am sure that you have picked up some medical terminology while working as a pharmacy teach. As well as the all important skill of being able do decipher a doctors handwriting. Having an eye for detail is important. Respecting patient confidentiality is also important. Best wishes to you.
