    Yes, it works. When you graduate with a nursing degree from an accredited institution, you know that your education will qualify you for licensure pretty much everywhere. After you graduate, you take the NCLEX-RN exam which earns you the RN license / title in the state you live/applied in. If you move to another state, there is a license-by-endorsement process which basically means you apply for a license in the new state, submit a background check, submit info about your education and your work history, and pay whatever their required fee is for your license and then you are licensed in both states (unless or until you allow one to expire). Some states are part of a nursing compact agreement which means that license by endorsement process is a little simplified and streamlined, but it's still essentially the same requirements.

There is no such thing as national accreditation. You have to exchange paperwork and fees with the new state to get permission and a license for that other state. Not exactly, but close to the meaning of a compact state. The NLN is a private organization. States are doing the same thing as you mention with "Compact States." The theory being that since i can drive my car in an adjoining state, why can't I also work in the adjoining state since my practice would also cover things in the second state. Marriage, ditto. So that means that since I live in Texas, and I am doing telephone triage in Arkansas, I can still work in "Arkansas." So you have to have a practice that would cover more than one state. I have this Compact license myself. Have never had to use it since I don't do travel/second state nursing. If you are a travel nurse, your agency will help you get licensed in any other state. Your JOB in more than one state is the only thing that qualifies for this compact requirement.
