What are the pros and cons of being a travel nurse?

  • I want to be a traveling prenatal nurse.

  • Answer:

I used to be a Recruiter for Travel Nurses. The last answer said you have to change hospitals every few months but you don't have to if you don't want to. A lot of Nurses just extend their contracts for a longer time, some stay for several years if the hospital has the need. If you don't mind being away from your home town it is a great way to make a lot of money and see other places. Something you should watch out for- many times you are placed in a hospital that has a lot of staffing problems or other issues like that (the reason for the need). You should talk to the Nursing Manager or someone at the hospital first to be sure its a good fit for you. Also be sure you have a Recruiter who will be there for you and answer your calls or call you back quickly (and is honest!)- that can be one of the most important things. Good luck!

Pros: great money and benefits, being able to travel and have new experiences Cons: never in the same place for very long so you don't really build a lot of strong co-worker relationships, always on the road and away from family / friends, having to adapt to a new hospital every few months and learn their unit routine Some people are cut out for it, others are not.
