What do board members do?

What responsibilities do board members typically have?

  • For example, if someone sits on the board of a non-profit organization what kinds of things would they be expected to do?

  • Answer:

It depends upon their title....attending board meetings, the secretary is responsible for not taking and publication of meeting minutes; financial officier, should have a very detailed description about how money comes in/out, decisions about what to fund.....may have a marketing person, responsible for brochures, newsletter; grant writer....writing/submitting monies. You also need a description of business processes, how decisions will be made, how many members need to be present in order to pass a resolution, etc. The non-profit I helped develop had a booklet we wrote desribing these things...about 20 pages. You might want to go to a non-profit near you and ask if they could share this info....it is public info.

The responsibilities of board members differ from institution to institution and they are well defined in the Articles of Association !!
