What does it take to be a cop?

Some police departments require only a high school diploma or GED, some police departments require a two year degree, and some police departments require a four year degree. The more education that you have, the better. Your background will be investigated and considered in its totality. Certain things will disqualify you. A criminal record for a "really small crime" may not disqualify you. Everyone makes mistakes. What the crime was, if you were a juvenile when it occurred, and how long ago it occurred will be taken into account. Also be prepared to be watched like a hawk at what ever you do. People are in the habit of not understanding that cops are people too. It depends on where you live. In NYC, you need 60 college credits to become a Police Officer. Other departments just require a high school education. Most of what you will need to now will be learned with your time on the streets. As for you criminal records, the one thing cops really hate is being lied to. Ask yourself is it really a petty crime? The Police have access to all your records, so dont try and say it was a misunderstanding.
