What is the difference between sales and marketing?

What is the difference between marketing and sales? Furthermore, how do they relate to one another?

I was recently asked this during a interview and was curious what others had to say. I appreciate all the help from everyone!

Selling is different from marketing. Selling is one part in marketing. marketing relates with customer.. it want it customer for longtime ..selling relates to product... it completes with selling the product... but now..sellling has become a crucial in marketing.. i will explain u...after selling the product, the company starts to build a relation with the customer like for instance forwarranties, prizes.. to make them to be their loyal customers.
