  There are a number of positions in the music industry. Yes, you can actually study "band management" but most people just get involved through osmosis. A manager will do a range of different activities to help the bands they manage. They will book gigs, arrange recording deals, create promotional material, arrange interviews, do press releases, make contacts in the industry and basically do many things to make sure the band is commercially successful. Many people get involved in the industry by getting involved. You know hanging around music studios, going to gigs, setting up recording equipment at home etc. It is hard to explain, but it mostly is something that just happens.
